Arrochar History

The name "Arrochar" is derived from the town of Arrochar in Scotland, ancestral home of the Clan MacFarlane. When William Wallace MacFarland built his estate in Staten Island in the 1840s, he named it after the Scottish town. The neighborhood later adopted this name, and today MacFarland's house still stands on the grounds of St. Joseph Hill Academy.

The neighborhood was once also home to famous architect Henry H. Richardson, and the home he designed for himself can still be found at 45 McClean Avenue.

Many such historic homes still rest along Hylan Boulevard, and various businesses in the area attest to Arrochar's Italian-American heritage.
